Pastelle: The Dream That Never Came to Life

Throughout the mid to late 2000’s, Kanye continued to hint at a clothing line. After a few months of speculation, we had a name: Pastelle. That name is all that the internet needed to go wild with anticipation. As sketches and previews began to surface, the eagerness grew. Then finally, we got something tangible.

At the 2008 American Music Awards, Ye hit the stage fresh off of the masterpiece that was 808s & Heartbreaks to accept his award for Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album in a bright blue varsity jacket that set the internet on fire.

The next moment in Pastelle history came in February 2009. Fellow GOOD Music member Kid Cudi appeared on 106 & Park promoting his then new single Day N Nite. Kanye popped up wearing a 1 of 1 Pastelle jacket that made an official release date seem even closer.

Fast forward to 2016. Ian Connor, once again, breaks the internet. The stylist and influencer had been spending a lot of time around Kanye during the “Pablo” era. This was also around the time Connor was featured in West’s Yeezy season fashion show at Madison Square Garden. The highlight of this period was Connor being photographed wearing the iconic 1 of 1 jacket that we’d previously seen on 106 & Park. Several editions of the original blue varsity jacket appeared as well, in addition to a basketball-themed tee.

While the pieces popped up across a couple celebrities and high-profile individuals, a widespread release never materialized. However, I haven’t given up. If we received a glimmer of hope 9 years later, who knows what the future holds.
